Once a week we take a look at interesting or fun developments in the world of eSports. This week we shine a light on the NBA joining eSports, James Rodriguez and a sponsorship deal between Deezer and FNATIC.
NBA invests in eSports
As of next year the National Basketball Association will officially enter the world of eSports. A ‘long-term play’ according to managing director Brian Donohue. He reckons the league will span multiple decades. “We have great data on NBA fans, and that’s a massive audience,” says Donohue. “We see that NBA fans are more likely to play video games, and actually more likely to engage in eSports than fans of other sports. I think there’s a pretty nice marriage here. The NBA league will kick off next year.”
Heartstone Championship Tour to be hosted in Amsterdam
Blizzard entertainment announced that the next Hearthstone Championship Tour will take place in Amsterdam, in the Beurs van Berlage conference centre to be specific. The digital trading card game has millions of fans and followers and their tournaments are massively attended. From the 18th until the 21st of January 2018 the world’s biggest Hearthstone stars will compete for a prize pool of a million dollar. The winner gets to take a quarter of the total home.
James Rodriguez joins eSports Team
Yes you read that correctly; Bayern Munich star James Rodrigues has joined esports organisation Ares Esport. However, he will not be competing in tournaments but he will be active in a supportive an ambassadorial role. Rodrigues joins Mahrez, Carrasco and Sisokko amongst others. The involvement of these players is, unsurprisingly, FIFA focused and is intended to give players from all backgrounds an opportunity to showcase their skills on ‘a global stage’. The ambassadors will lend their support via ‘coaching, social networks and physical presence at Ares events’. The current James Rodriguez Welcome Tournament opened on October 14th and has a prize pool of €2.500,-.
